Silas the Sentry Gargoyle SculptureThe gargoyle is one of the more interesting art themes to have come out of Europe during the Middle Ages. Way back then, these intimidating, frightening looking sculptures were actually considered to be functional works of art. They weren't placed on churches and castles because clergy and royalty had a particular penchant for horror-themed objets d'art. No, gargoyles were used to scare away evil spirits and other would be foes. Some were also used to help siphon water off roofs or even pour boiling oil on enemies besieging the castle.

Such uses are no longer needed during modern times but that hasn't diminished the popularity of using gargoyles for decorations.  Whether following a Gothic theme in the garden or simply looking for a detailed, unique statue for the inside of a home or business, gargoyles act as classic decor.

Is that a Real Bulldog or an Animal Yard Statue?

Wednesday, April 18, 2012
by Jennifer Quigley

Sculptures of animals have been used in gardens and backyards since ancient Babylon. Their popularity as decor endures because they represent the power, virtue, and beauty of nature. In the case of statues of lions, dragons, or other strong, intimidating beasts, they have also been employed as erstwhile Buster the Bulldog Sculptureguardians. As with gargoyles, it is hoped that such animal sculptures will keep the bad spirits from crossing the threshold and bring good luck to their place of residence.

While animal statues of yore were obviously sculptures made of still, unmovable stone, modern resin sculpting technologies have added such an incredible degree of detail to the mix that people routinely take a second or even third glance when confronted with pieces like the Buster the Bulldog Sculpture

Crafted with incredible realism, this sculpture truly captures the intimidating yet loveable look of the English Bulldog. With ears perked up on its massive head and sitting on its haunches, Buster is always ready to chew on a rubber ball or snap up whatever snack that happens to be thrown his way. He makes an excellent gift for any bulldog fan and looks content in both home and garden.

Guard the Garden and Home with this Gargoyle Statue

Gargoyles were developed centuries ago to scare evil spirits away from churches and other sacred Silas the Sentry Gargoyle Sculptureplaces. One can easily surmise how these stone creatures with reptilian wings, large fangs, and clawed hands could intimidate both spirits and people who are up to no good. Although I wouldn't rely on using gargoyle figurines to keep intruders out of the backyard, they still make for excellent garden sculptures and conversation pieces.

One of the most realistic and detailed gargoyle statues available from Design Toscano is Silas the Sentry. With a height of two feet, this muscled, crouching gargoyle looks ready to pounce on any and all intruders and would make short work of them with its talons and sharp teeth. Whereas some gargoyles perch on the eaves or upper levels of structures, Silas represents the sentry gargoyles that are placed on or close to the ground. Put him near the back door and facing the garden to "protect" your home or place Silas next to one of the tables in the backyard. No matter where you put this frightening sentry, he is going to make an impact on both guests and the ambiance of your garden!

Create a Perimeter of Protection With Garden Gargoyles

Thursday, November 17, 2011
by Jennifer Quigley
The Cathedral Gargoyle StatueYou don’t need to know the inherent symbolism behind the gargoyle to know that they mean business when it comes to protection.  You just need to look at one.  If you want a truly unique outdoor security system, gargoyle garden statues will be all the rage for any evil spirits or pests that try to work their way into your space.

Our Cathedral Gargoyle Statue is a garden gargoyle statue that is foreboding enough to look at and will ward off any evil doers near your home, without breaking the bank.  This guy is ready to strike, and will certainly ensure that nobody enters that doesn’t belong.

But if you don’t want to go as menacing as the cathedral style, you can choose gargoyle figurines and place them strategically throughout your space to create the perimeter of protection that you seek.  Another option is something as simple as our gargoyle bench which will serve both as a decorative and practical piece in your garden.

When it comes to creating a truly secure outdoor space, gargoyles are a wonderful way to do so.  Not only are they unique and foreboding in their protective nature, but they are also much more affordable than most garden statues at your local garden center.  Choosing gargoyles for your outdoors is a great way to create both protection and beauty at the same time.

Why Wall Sculptures Are a More Contemporary Design Element Than Art

Monday, October 17, 2011
by Jennifer Quigley
Many people looking to spice up their homes look straight to the art galleries for assistance in wall decor.  If you are looking for a way to add that something extra to your room, find out here why you may want to consider wall sculptures over modern art in your living space.
Most interior themes centered around an Egyptian flair are not looking to create a temple with their home. Egyptian home decor then is useful for adding something a little bit different to your existing design theme, whether that is traditional or contemporary.  Being different is the new “in” when it comes to contemporary design, and the simple addition of something such as this will certainly make for a conversation piece at any of your gatherings.

Prometheus, The Rebel Titan Sculptural Wall PedimentThe design themes that come from the Greek and Gothic eras are also making a comeback into contemporary themes.  Transform traditional Greek garden statues into a wall sculpture over your doorway or mantle and add a new look instantly by bringing the Greek gods right into your home.  With a piece such as this, you make the old new again with a room that will embody tradition, even if its theme is contemporary.  Or you can even take the drama one step further through a wall sculpture holding gargoyle figurines that convey a sense of protection and security for your home.

Today the most contemporary design themes are incorporating a more interactive and dramatic way to add pomp to a room through wall sculptures.
